Junior Representative Program

Pathway, Development, Opportunity.

The Hervey Bay Hurricanes Representative Program gives our junior players the chance to take their basketball to the next level. If you love the game, work hard, and want to challenge yourself, we encourage you to trial!
Our teams compete in the CQJBC (Central Queensland Junior Basketball Competition) and the Basketball Queensland State Championships. These competitions bring together the best junior athletes from across Queensland and offer a clear development pathway for players aiming for higher-level basketball.

πŸ€ Who Can Trial

All players from Hervey Bay Basketball club are welcome to trial. We also offer limited exemptions to other regional associations who cannot field a team for that age group – players must attend the trials in person to be considered.
If you are passionate about improving your game, a team player, and committed to the extra trainings – you should be there.

Age groups offered each year include:
U12, U14, U16, and U18 – Boys and Girls

Competition Pathway

CQJBC Season

β€’ 3 Weekend Carnivals are held in venues such as Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone and Hervey Bay (parents are required to travel to these or coordinate with another parent in the team to assist with taking their child)
β€’ Teams may organise friendly matches with other associations in which teams will coordinate travel etc

BQ State Championships

β€’ Held during the school holidays
β€’ All Hurricanes teams attend (location varies by age group)

Player State Selection
Attending State Championships for players U14 and above will assist with individuals to be identified through the Future Pathways and State Performance programs by Basketball Queensland.

Rep Team Selection Process

Our goal is to give every player a fair opportunity while ensuring teams are competitive and supported by qualified coaches.

1. Coach Selection Process
Several of our parents are highly experienced coaches and do nominate for Rep coaching roles. When Parent Coach/Player Child conflicts occur HBBA does not appoint coaches until after the first player selection trial. This ensures all players are shortlisted fairly based on their trial and known club experience. Our player selection panel consists of Representatives from our Rep Committee, HBBA Executive Committee and accredited coaches who represent that age group in the club competition. Where possible HBBA will include people in the selection panel that acknowledges diversity and equal opportunity.

2. Register & Check Eligibility
Players must:
β€’ Be registered with Hervey Bay Basketball or a member of a regional association
β€’ Be financial (no outstanding fees)
β€’ Meet Basketball Queensland eligibility and transfer requirements

3. Attend Trials
β€’ Usually held over one to two sessions
β€’ Run by our Representative Program Coordinators and coaching staff
β€’ Participating in trials does not guarantee selection
β€’ The number of teams formed depends on player ability, coach availability and venue capacity

3. Team Selections
Families will be notified by email with:
β€’ Team placement (if selected)
β€’ Acceptance requirements
β€’ First training dates and season commitments

Please note: Accepting a position means you are committing to the full representative season, including attendance at the State Championships.

4. Training
β€’ Most teams train 1-2 times per week
β€’ Additional weekend sessions may occur depending on competition dates and coach availability
β€’ Consistent attendance is essential

Costs

The HBBA Representative Program is run on a non-profit basis with all committee members, coaches, and team managers volunteering their time and expertise at no cost. Fees collected are used to fund the expenses of the rep program only.

These expenses include BQ nomination fees, training court hire, referee fees, coaches’ accommodation and travel expenses, carnival entry costs, and equipment/supplies for teams. The fees paid by players do not represent the total cost of the program, with these fees being set lower through the support of corporate sponsorships and fundraising activities undertaken by the teams.

CQJB Carnivals and States Championships
$1,300 (approx.) and can be paid by instalments over the course of the season. (This does not include travel or accommodation of players).

Uniform Cost is $200 (Playing Uniforms, Polo Shirt & Training Singlet). Returning rep players can reuse their uniform and are only required to purchase the updated players polo (showing current sponsors).

Financial Assistance

All selected players are eligible to receive a $500 Queensland Government rebate via application to the Emerging Athlete Pathways program (for attending the State Championships). This is paid back to you after the event has been attended. Information is provided by the Rep Coordinator after the carnival.

Hervey Bay Basketball offers a limited number of Financial Hardship Scholarships available to support players that would not otherwise be able to accept a place in a representative team. If you would like further information on this, please email repofhbba@gmail.com.
